Diversity in The Workplace Should Never Be Reduced To Fulfilling Quotas

posted by Angela Quach, 2024

It’s no secret that companies are increasingly highlighting diversity in their branding. But here's the reality: the true value of diversity and inclusion is often underestimated and overlooked where it really matters- behind the scenes.

Real inclusion goes far beyond simply ticking boxes. It’s about ensuring diverse perspectives have a seat at the table and are actively contributing to the decisions that shape a company’s future. It’s about embedding diversity into the fabric of company culture, not just showcasing it when it's convenient or trendy. And let me tell you, getting there isn’t easy. It takes commitment, intention, and real work.

In my own professional journey, I’ve personally experienced how diversity can be undervalued. At times, it felt like my age, gender, and race mattered more than my experience. I saw how opportunities were reserved for those who fit neatly into certain molds, while others—especially those of us who didn’t conform to these preconceived notions—were sidelined or overlooked.

Those experiences fueled my passion to advocate for something deeper. Talking about diversity isn’t enough; we have to make sure it’s at the core of what we do. It has to be more than a conversation—it needs to be a mission.

As leaders, we have to challenge ourselves to do better. It’s not enough to focus on appearances or to have diversity initiatives that are only skin-deep. We need to make sure inclusion is woven into every part of our organizations. Every voice matters. Every perspective adds value. If we want real, authentic change, we have to create spaces where diverse employees aren’t just present but are truly empowered and heard.

Fulfilling quotas should never be the goal. The real work starts when we stop treating diversity as a PR move and start recognizing it as the key to building stronger, more innovative companies. Real inclusion happens when diverse voices aren’t just included in the conversation but are shaping it from the start. That’s when we’ll see true transformation. And that’s the mission we should all be striving for.
